This two-day course will provide architecture and other design professionals in public interest design with in-depth study on methods of how design can address the critical issues faced by communities. Training in public interest design is a way of enhancing an existing design practice and learning skills to become pro-actively engaged in community-based design. The curriculum is formed around the Social Economic Environmental Design (SEED) metric, a set of standards that outlines the process and principles of this growing approach to design. This process provides a step-by-step aid for those who want to undertake public interest design. Certification in the SEED process will be given.

National smart growth experts to speak on
"Smart Growth and Economic Success"
Towson, MD Lee Sobel and Christopher Coes, national experts on smart growth, will speak on "Smart Growth and Economic Success" Thursday, April 18 at 4:00 p.m. The presentation, hosted by the Baltimore County Department of Planning, is open to the public and will be held in the Jefferson Building, 105 West Chesapeake Avenue, Room 104, Towson 21204.
The speakers will discuss smart growth development approaches that make developed areas more attractive and economically stronger, while protecting natural resources. Smart growth communities generally include a compact mix of residential, retail and employment land uses designed to be accessible not only by driving but also by walking, bicycling or via transit.
As part of his research, Mr. Sobel has found that homes in smart growth developments have greater resale value than those in more conventional suburban communities. Across the county, the trend toward these compact, communities is growing, not only because more people want to live a more sustainable lifestyle, but also because it makes economic sense.
Lee Sobel currently works as a real estate development and finance analyst at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency´s Office of Sustainable Communities, following career in the private sector as a commercial real estate investor and mortgage broker in Florida. Christopher Coes is the Managing Director for LOCUS, a national network of real estate developers and investors who advocate for sustainable, walkable development in towns, cities, and suburbs.
The presentation, part of a Baltimore County Planning Board meeting, can also be viewed through May 2 on BCTV Comcast Channel 25 Mondays at 9:30 p.m., Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 9:00 a.m.
